Hydrogen is a viable energy carrier for carbon-neutral heavy-duty transportation applications since it could be used to drive fuel cells or ICEs and can be refueled quickly. Unlike fuel cells, hydrogen ICEs use current base engine technology to provide carbon-neutral mobility. To provide cheap hydrogen truck and bus options, powertrain efficiency will be a major success element.

TUPY, Westport, and AVL will collaborate on the production of an HPDI H2-ICE to optimize the effectiveness and therefore the fuel usage of present spark ignited hydrogen ICEs. Superior materials, casting, and machining processes are necessary to handle with high peak firing pressures. Westport has already presented successful starting and trials of heavy-duty ICEs running on H2 utilizing HPDI, while AVL completed the development of the AVL Hydrogen Engine in cooperation with Graz University of Technology earlier this year. By early 2022, the first tested findings of this new collaborative development effort with AVL, TUPY, and Westport should be available.
