Absence of availability to nutritious foods is among the most significant health obstacles for persons with food-sensitive health problems such as diabetes, hypertension, overweight/obesity, and high-risk pregnancy. According to the USDA, 15% of the commercially insured population lives in a low-access food region or food desert.

Furthermore, the study discovered wide disparities in access to employer-sponsored resources to meet these needs. While 70% of employers give behavioral health services via the EAPs and other supplemental projects, and 63 percent now deliver telehealth programs as a substitute to overuse of ER services, only 1% offer healthy food programs, only 7% offer financial programs beyond EAP, and less than 0.5 percent offer either child care or transportation.

Dr. Bruce Sherman, study co-author and assistant clinical professor of medicine at Case Western Reserve University commented,

Many persons with SDoH-related obstacles to treatment are compelled to make healthcare decisions with limited resource alternatives because they don’t have access to the resources they need to be healthy. Individuals may postpone or forego treatment, or choose for more convenient but more expensive providers for essential care, such as the emergency department, resulting in increased expenditures. More significantly, individuals are at a far higher risk of developing disease-specific consequences if they do not receive frequent primary care follow-up.
