What is happening?
Eros Now, a prominent over-the-top South Asian entertainment medium owned by Eros STX Worldwide Corporation, a global entertainment corporation, has revised its collaboration with Mzaalo, a gamified video streaming service operated by Xfinite Global Plc. While allowing Eros Now to maintain establishing its primary subscription video on-demand (SVOD) service, the arrangement expands Eros Now’s reach in advertising video on-demand (AVOD), a still-developing section of the India streaming industry with tremendous growth potential. Considering Xfinite’s creative business concept, this deal also gives ErosSTX a strong option on future growth in digital assets and blockchain technology.
For worldwide AVOD monetization, ErosSTX is licensing the bulk of the current Eros Now content catalog to Xfinite on the exclusive basis. Material leased from third party companies with sub-licensing limitations, as well as English-language content, including STX content, are prohibited from this licensing deal. This deal does not prevent Eros Now from establishing Eros Now Prime, its projected English-language service, or from licensing material to other SVOD providers. This AVOD project will allow Eros Now to efficiently monetize a vast and engaged user base. The AVOD platform will be a crucial component of Eros Now’s future content strategy, allowing for new release times that will provide customers with more options and flexibility. Eros Now intends to deliver premium original films and movies to Eros Now paying users in the first window.
ErosSTX is entitled to a minimum guaranteed cash payment of $42 million during the remaining four-year licensing period, which ends in December 2024, under the modified and restated deal with Mzaalo. Under the initial deal, which began in 2018, ErosSTX has already earned $18 million in minimum guaranteed payments. ErosSTX will also receive a 50% share of any Mzaalo revenue earned beyond the guaranteed minimum. Finally, ErosSTX will get 400 million XET Digital Tokens in return for access to Eros Now’s user database, which has 224 million registered members as of March 31, 2021.
